How sponsorship works

When you sponsor through Unbound, you offer a hand up — not a handout — to a family working to lift themselves out of poverty through hard work, initiative and hope.

Your monthly contribution of $40 directly benefits the specific individual you sponsor to help meet their basic needs.

But your sponsorship does so much more.

With your support, our program empowers sponsored individuals and their families with tools to achieve self-sufficiency.

Local staff members work with sponsored families on how to best use their benefits to achieve personal and family goals. This may include resources for:

  • Nutrition
  • Health care
  • Education and skills training
  • Improved living conditions
  • Seed capital for a small business or farm

Thanks to your support and encouragement, families are able to invest in their children's education, develop livelihoods and become active community participants.

Over time, they rely less on sponsorship and more on their own income-generation activities.

What happens when I become a sponsor?

Your first contribution gets everything started. We’ll send you a receipt and send your new sponsored friend the exciting news that he or she now has a sponsor.

Register your account

Once your account is set up, we’ll send you an invitation to register for online access.

With your online account, you can:

  • Write an eLetter to your friend
  • Print copies of your friend's photo
  • Manage your account and view payment history
  • Donate to Unbound's Scholarship Program, Critical Needs Fund and more
  • Learn about the benefits and services available to your friend

Watch your mail

  • Next, we’ll send you mailing labels and tips for writing to your friend.
  • You’ll also receive letters from your friend at least twice a year and publications with stories about the impact of sponsorship.
