Earthquake felt in Nicaragua

June 15, 2013

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the Pacific coast of Nicaragua around midday Saturday, June 15, news agencies reported.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damages.

CFCA serves more than 10,000 sponsored children, youth and elderly friends in Nicaragua through a project based in the capital, Managua.

Project staffers check on sponsored friends and their families when earthquakes and other natural events impact communities served by CFCA. They make sure families are OK and get help with immediate and long-term needs.

The earthquake occurred 50 kilometers (31 miles) west of Masachapa and 90 kilometers (56 miles) southwest of Managua, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Nicaragua's seismological institute issued a tsunami alert as a precaution because of the quake's strength, according to news reports.
