CFCA suggests groups for Haiti donations

January 15, 2010

CFCA’s outreach in Haiti is centered near Ferrier, located about 80 miles northeast of the capital of Port-au-Prince. Following a 7.0-magnitude earthquake Jan. 12, the Ferrier project reported that there were no injuries or damages affecting the approximately 800 sponsored members and staff.

As CFCA does not have a project in Port-au-Prince, the area most impacted by the earthquake, we recommend that donations be made to organizations such as Catholic Relief Services that are working with relief efforts in the city.

The American Institute of Philanthropy, on its website, lists CRS and other top-rated charities involved in earthquake relief in Haiti.

Any donations received by CFCA that are designated for Haiti will be directed to our Ferrier project for assistance to sponsored members and their families. CFCA anticipates that sponsored children and aging members in the Ferrier area will be affected by the quake’s impact on family members living and working in the city, and by disruptions in supplies and services as the country’s scarce resources are diverted to Port-au-Prince.

In addition, city residents are beginning to migrate to the countryside in search of water, food and shelter.

CFCA anticipates delays in correspondence between sponsored members and their sponsors as air transportation in Haiti is utilized for earthquake relief.

Please join the CFCA community around the world as we keep the Haitian people in our thoughts and prayers.
