CFCA members reported safe after Kenya mall shootings
September 23, 2013
NAIROBI, Kenya— CFCA has received no reports of sponsored friends, their families or staff members being directly impacted by the shootings at a Nairobi mall over the weekend.
"We are well but still praying for a peaceful release of hostages still holed up in a Nairobi mall since Saturday's terror attack," said Peter Ndungo, CFCA-Nairobi coordinator.
A group of sponsors traveling on a CFCA awareness trip in Africa had left Nairobi Saturday for the Uganda portion of the trip, and all trip participants are safe. The sponsors and CFCA staff members accompanying them learned of the attack after arriving in Uganda.
According to news reports, the Kenyan Red Cross said that more than 60 people had died in the terror attack that began Saturday at Nairobi’s upscale Westgate Mall. At least 175 people were reported injured.
Fighting continued Monday as government troops attempted to gain control of the mall and free any remaining hostages.
The Somalia-based Al-Shabaab group has claimed responsibility, according to news reports.
The CFCA worldwide family holds the victims, the people of Kenya and all those impacted by the shootings in our thoughts and prayers.
