CFCA families in Philippines prepare for storm
June 23, 2011
LEGAZPI, Philippines — Sponsored members and their families served by CFCA in the Philippines took precautions as Tropical Storm Meari hit the country.
Heavy rains from the storm hit Manila and caused severe flooding during rush hour Thursday. CFCA has not received news of how the storm impacted families there.
CFCA serves about 8,600 sponsored children, youths and aging people in Legazpi, and more than 32,000 in and around the Manila metropolitan area.
"[The storm] is already up in the Albay province, and we hope and pray this will not continue to become a super typhoon," said CFCA-Legazpi Coordinator Gari Olavario.
Media outlets reported that 7,000 people were evacuated from the Bicol peninsula on Luzon island where Legazpi is located.
Olavario said the local government is monitoring the storm and will alert residents of impending floods and landslides. He said the CFCA project will begin evacuations if needed.
