CFCA communities appear safe after Peru quake

May 7, 2010

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the evening of May 5 near the Peru-Chile border. CFCA-Kansas has not received any reports of injuries or damage in its communities closest to the area.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the epicenter offshore 20 miles west of Tacna, Peru, and 35 miles northwest of Arica, Chile. CFCA serves 374 children, youth and aging members in Arequipa, Peru, 140 miles north of the epicenter, and more than 2,500 sponsored members in La Paz, Bolivia, about 175 miles northwest.

The quake was hundreds of miles north of CFCA's project in Valparaiso, Chile, where an 8.8-magnitude quake in late February severely damaged the project office but did not harm sponsored members or staff. Hundreds of aftershocks have been recorded since that quake.
